marriage Is Marriage Good For You?

Does marriage make you fat or slim you down? Well, not surprisingly, it depends.

A new study suggests both "marriage" and "divorce" cause something called a "weight shock." These shocks can lead to adding on some extra weight, especially if you are over 30 years old.

According to the study men and women respond differently to marriage and divorce. Men run the risk of gaining a significant amount of weight after going through the effects of a divorce. For women those risks increase after getting married.

“Clearly, the effect of marital transitions on weight changes differs by gender,” said Dmitry Tumin, lead author of the study and doctoral student in sociology at Ohio State University.

“Divorces for men and, to some extent, marriages for women promote weight gains that may be large enough to pose a health risk.”

Turning 30 years old is mark where those risk dramatically increase.

“For someone in their mid-20s, there is not much of a difference in the probability of gaining weight between someone who just got married and someone who never married. But later in life, there is much more of a difference," Tumin said.

For years now research has suggested marriage helps in reducing unwanted health habits, such as smoking and alcohol and drug abuse, while promoting healthier habits like a proper diet and regular trips to the doctor for checkups. But now there is new research that suggests straight and gay couples in a long-term relationship also run the risk of picking up each other's vices as well.  According to sociologist Corinne Recezek, ""One individual's unhealthy habits directly promotes the other’s unhealthy habits."

According to Tumin couples settle into physical patterns of behavior and diet over the life of their relationship. “As you get older, having a sudden change in your life like a marriage or a divorce is a bigger shock than it would have been when you were younger, and that can really impact your weight.”
