Social Media & Modern Cheating

in Latest News

social media Social Media & Modern CheatingAccording to a recent survey, one divorce out of five has been caused by Facebook. That staggering number is caused by the number of people using social media to instigate an extramarital affair. Social networking sites are a great way to meet someone new and become involved, even after marriage it appears.

Men who used to surf the fantasy world of porn site are now going online to meet women on the social networking sites. And, the lines of fantasy and reality are becoming blurred thanks to the Internet and social media.

And, it is not all about blazing a new trail and meeting someone new. In many instances it’s about reaching into your past and re-connecting with an old flame. This according to marriage counselor Steven Kimmons:

“We’re coming across it more and more. One spouse connects online with someone they knew from high school. The person is emotionally available and they start communicating through Facebook. Within a short amount of time, the sharing of personal stories can lead to a deepened sense of intimacy, which in turn can point the couple in the direction of physical contact.”

Of course couples already experiencing trouble have the most to lose, but no couple, even those on solid-footing, are immune to the trouble that can be caused due to the popularity of social media.  Often online relationships start off with good intentions only to end up in betrayal.

More from Kimmons:

“I don’t think these people typically set out to have affairs. A lot of it is curiosity. They see an old friend or someone they dated and decide to say ‘hello’ and catch up on where that person is and how they’re doing.”

One thing leads to the other and before you know it, someone has transpired that was never intended.

If you’re looking to protect a valued relationship, beware of Facebook and other social networking sites.

I have been through a betrayal that I thought would break me. It didn't. It made me stronger and more resolute. I am a wiser and a better person in the end. I now know the most important relationship you ever have is with yourself. Be responsible and demand the life you want. No excuses. No playing the role of "victim."
